Cabaret

Stage Manager

In a Berlin nightclub, as the 1920s draw to a close, a garish Master of Ceremonies welcomes the audience and assures them they will forget all their troubles at the Cabaret.  Based on the 1998 Broadway revival, Cabaret explores the dark, heady and tumultuous life of Berlin’s natives and expatriates as Germany slowly yields to the emerging Third Reich. Cliff, a young American writer newly arrived in Berlin, is immediately taken with English singer Sally Bowles. Meanwhile, Fräulein Schneider, proprietor of Cliff and Sally’s boarding house, tentatively begins a romance with Herr Schultz, a mild-mannered fruit seller who happens to be Jewish.

Run Sheet

Primary document created while in this position. There were over 45 scenic transitions in this production, each requiring the movement of between 2 and 17 scenic, prop, or fly elements.

The right-most document details every transition in the production, while the near-right document is an enlarged sample.

In the document, the left hand column details what scene (or between which scenes) the shift happens in, while the top of each section on the furthest right gives the specific cue line or action that the shift should start. The second column from the left has the initials of the person, the third with the action, and the fourth lists the object. This is so that you can read the cue, for example: “[Tanner] [Sets] [Audio Board]”. Doing this simplifies commands for the crew and cast, so that they can easily find their name, action, and object. The furthest right column also contains any notes about a specific item’s shift.
